| COACHES 1923-33
From 1923-28 most coaches had LMS in the waist panel near the centre with the number towards each end but rarely at the extreme end in small X serif style figures - LMS in 4" size on most coaches but 3" on many pre-group vehicles with limited waist panel depth and on many non-passenger coaching stock vehicles, e.g., fish and milk vans. From 1929 the number appeared once only towards the right hand end of the coach with L M S towards the left. From 1929.32 the larger 'stretched' shaded numbers were used. The unshaded block numbers were used on renumbered and new coaches from 1932. The round coat of arms was used on many end-door corridor and open coaches (often not on third class coaches) and on most saloons. Dining can etc., with waist panels had the wording in the panel with the coat of arms below. Flush sided coaches had the coat of arms in the lower part of the side with the words spaced either side opt Passenger doors other than on unclassed restaurant can carried class figures 1 or 3. Shaded yellow insignia, (1934.48) is on Sheet 2 and the plain straw 1946-47 block style is on Sheet 2a. The window labels 'SMOKING' cannot be included in this sheet for reasons of space. They are included on Sheet 2. For further information, please refer to 'Locomotive Liveries of the LMS' and 'The LMS Coach' by R.J, Essery and D. Jenkinson.
LOCOMOTIVES 1923-27
Locos were numbered in black-shaded figures in 18" size on most larger tenders and tanks of some larger tank engines. Most tank engines and some smaller tenders had 14" size numbers. Red engines had the very small L M S on cabsides during 1923 and the round coat of arms 1924.28. Black engines had the red and gold L M S panel on the cabsides, the concave cornered type being the earlier pattern. Unshaded power class figures represent the brass ones on MR locos - others used the shaded pattern. Tank locos rarely had thorn before 1928, Letters P and F introduced at the same time,
LOCOMOTIVES 1928-38
Most red engines had black shaded insignia. some of the Compounds and most lined black engines had red shaded insignia. Unlined black engines not painted at Crewe used black shaded gold transfers. Company identity after 1927 was usually indicated by L M S on the tender. Spacing varied. The largest, 60" centres, was used mainly on Stonier curved top tenders; the next, 53" centres was on most large pre-group tank locos, many Deeley, Fowler and Scottish pro-group benders and Horwich painted tenders. The closest spacing on the sheet, 40" centres, appeared on most ex-LNWR Johnson and Kirtley tenders, some Fowler tenders and on standard 2-6-4T and 2-6-2T locos. On Garratts and small tank locos with 27" or closer spacing cut and fit letters separately. Royal Scots and un-stream lined Pacifies had 14" cabside nos, Princess Royals, Jubilees and most Compounds had 12* . 10" numbers were used on some Compounds, engines with small cabs and at St. Rollox works, on a wide variety of locos. New locos built by Crewe, Derby and outside contractors during 1936-38 and the streamlined used block style insignia. for reasons of space this is included in Sheet 2a, together with the 1946.47 block insignia and the plain straw serif style insignia used by Crewe works on all plain black engines from 1928. NOTE: To save space some of the coats of arms are printed between the loco letters. If the latter are required first, cut through the tissue round the coats of arms so as to leave them on the backing paper. Sheet 2 includes the red-shaded and plain yellow insignia of 1938.47.

| LOCOMOTIVES
Red-shaded insignia was standard from 1938 until around 1942, except for streamlined Pacifies and almost all unlined black locos painted at Crewe. (Transfers for these locos can be found on Sheet 2a). After 1942 and until 1945 shaded insignia was confined largely to new construction and to full re-paints (which were rare) of passenger engines. Unshaded insignia was used for the partial wartime repaints and by Horwich works for fully re-painted goods engines. From 1946, Crewe works mainly used the outlined block style, found on Sheet 2a, but the other works, to a large extent, continued to use the serif insignia found on this sheet. Three spacings of tender / tank letters LMS are provided The widest, at 60" centres, was used mainly on Stanier curved top tenders. The next at 53" centres, was used on most large pre-Group and Horwich painted tenders and the closest spacing on the sheet at 40" centres, appeared on most ex-LNWR, Johnson and Kirtley tenders, some Fowler tenders and on Fowler, Stanier and Fairbum 2-6-2T and 2-6-4T locos. On Garratts and small tank locos, with 27" spacing or closer, cut out and fit the letters separately. The largest numbers, 14" size are for Royal Scot and unstreamlined Pacific locos up to 1942. 12" size numbers are for the Princess and Jubilee classes and most Compounds as well as the previously named classes after 1942. Some Compounds had 10" size numbers. Other locos officially had the largest size that would fit applied to them. The use of photographic reference is essential as there were many anomalies.
COACHES
The letters LMS were applied in the waist panel towards the left or at about waist level on unpanelled as the standard insignia for coaches from 1934-1947, except for relatively few which had the 1946 block style, found on Sheet 2a. Numbers were applied on the right at the same level. Block style numbers wee used from 1934-1939 and serif style from 1940-1947. Class figures 1 & 3 were mounted in the centres of lower door panel; the round topped 3 from 1934-1939 and the flat topped 3 from 1940 to 1947. Many coaches of course were never re-painted to receive the later style figures. Blue SMOKING and red NON-SMOKING window labels are reverse-printed for application to the interior of the coach. The coach coat-of-arms are supplied for dining, sleeping and other saloon vehicles and certain end door corridor stock - mainly those vehicles which offer 1st Class accommodation. They were not applied to non-corridor stock or to side-door corridor vehicles.

LMS Coach lining |

|
(Pressfix) |
| This lining is for LMS coaches painted in the simple livery, introduced in 1934. Flush sided coaches had a yellow-black-yellow line along the waist, normally at door handle height. A pair of yellow lines were applied at the top of the side, just above the windows and just below the cantrail. The lower of these lines was normally interrupted by the door ventilator hoods, which were not lined.
Wooden bodied fully panelled coaches had the lines applied along the horizontal mouldings. If there were two waist mouldings, the line was normally along the upper one. At the top of the side, the yellow lines were applied along the centre of the moulding or mouldings above the windows.
The lines provided will line coaches up to 62 feet scale length in one piece. A few sleeping or catering vehicles were longer than this - it will normally be possible to arrange for the joins to coincide with door handles or ventilators.

| CRIMSON LAKE LOCOS
(Officially all passenger locos 1923-27, then principal express passenger classes only, 1928 to about 1940)
The outer edges of all crimson lake panels were black, with a pale yellow line next to the crimson lake. Large areas (e.g. cab and tender sides) usually had a broad black edging and smaller areas a narrow one. Flat beadings on cab and tender sides all black with the yellow on the beading, not the panel. (Vertical beadings in the middle of a panel usually left crimson lake). Many special shapes are provided including steps, splashers, tender frame cut-outs, cabsides and tender top curves, but it is impossible to provide all shapes which might be required, especially pre-1928. Note the boiler bands were unlined except those adjacent to the smokebox and cab. The footplate angle was lined along its lower edge. Buffer beam edges were lined.
LINED BLACK LOCOS
(The 'Intermediate Passenger' or' Standard Mixed Traffic' livery, 1928 to about 1940).
These locos were finished in varnished black. In principle there was a red line where a crimson lake loco would have had a yellow one, except that steps and tender sideframes were unlined, as were the footplate angles of standard tank locos. Tender and cabside panels often had rounded corners, though not when on raised beadings with square corners.
1946 LINED BLACK LIVERY
(Confined to Pacifies, Royal Scots, Patriots and Jubilees - by no means all even of these received it before nationalisation).
A broad maroon edging with a straw line next to the black was applied on tender sides ( all round) and cabsides (not the top edge). The front curve and main horizontal of the footplate angle was maroon, edged straw both sides (no footplate lining below the cab). Front and back boiler bands and back firebox band unlined some locos at first, then maroon with straw both edges. Front and back of outside cylinders, narrow vertical maroon line with straw both edges.

| GREEN LOCOMOTIVES
From about March to September 1923, locos were lettered L & N E R, sometimes with full stops, on the tender or tank sides in small (7½) letters with the number below in large (12”') numbers. Locos painted after Sept. 1923 until the end of 1928 had 7½" letters L N E R. Tank engines continued to he lettered in the same way, but from early 1929 tender engines normally had large 12” letters L N E R on the tender sides with the number the same size on the cabside. Some small tenders, especially in Scotland, had 7½" letters, while locos with small cabs used 9" or 7½" numbers. All LNER locos had the number to the right of the front buffer beam coupling hook with NO to the left. North Eastern area tank locos frequently had the number repeated on the back.
The official list of locos to be painted green and therefore lettered in the gilt insignia of this sheet was as follows until 1928: - A1 (A10), A2, A3, B1 (B18), B2(B19), B3, B4, B12, B14, B17, C1-2, C4-8, C10-11, D1-26, D28-34, D36, D38, D40-44, D49, El-5, ‘901’, Xl-4. After mid-1928 this was reduced to:- Al(A10), A2-3, Bl(B18), B2(B19),B3-4, B12, B17, Cl, C6-8, C11, D49,Xl-3. The following were added when built:
A4, C9, K4, P2, V2, V4. This insignia also applies to A4 class whether blue or green, except for No's:-4488/92/5/6 which had stainless steel insignia. Most repainting in wartime was in black with yellow insignia which is on Sheet 4a. Sheet 4a also includes the very small white lettering for loco class number (post 1943) and a selection of shed names. These are for application below the buffer beam number.
COACHES
Coaches were normally lettered LNER towards the left of the coach, in the upper of the two panels below the waist with the number towards the right-hand end and GUARD on single guard's doors. Class figures appeared in the bottom panel of each passenger door. The use of 3 was discontinued after 1941. Special designations SLEEPING CAR etc., appeared in the bottom panels. The larger size LNER and numerals were used on the Tourist stock of the `thirties'. The sheet includes four sample names for steam railmotors - many more can be made up from the letters on the sheet.

| BLACK LOCOMOTIVES
LNER locos painted black normally used the shaded yellow insignia on this sheet. Green painted classes using gilt insignia (mainly the principal passenger types) are listed in the instruction on Sheet 4. Almost all tank engines were black until after the war, when green was officially adopted for all engines (though the great majority were never repainted). From about March to September 1923, locos were lettered L&NER, sometimes with full stops, on the tender or tank sides in small (7½") letters with the number below in large (12") numbers. Locos painted from Oct. 1923 till the end of 1928 had 7½" letters LNER This style did not change for tank engines, but from early 1929 tender engines normally had large 12" letters with LNER on the tender sides and the number the same size on the cabside. Some small tenders, especially in Scotland had 7½" letters, while locos with small cabs used 9" or 7½" numbers. All LNER locos had the number to the right of the coupling hook on the front buffer beam, with N° to the left. North Eastern area tank locos often had the number repeated on the back. From the end of 1941, all loco painting was in unlined black. From mid-1942, the lettering was shortened to NE. In this style, 12" letters were commonly used on tank engines instead of the otherwise universal 7½"
GILL SANS STYLE INSIGNIA
This style was introduced from the end of 1946 to replace both the yellow and gilt insignia formerly in use. Sizes and positions were as before, with smaller numbers for cabsides of restricted size.
CLASS DESIGNATIONS & SHED NAMES
These small white markings are for use both with this sheet and with Sheet 4 (gold insignia). North Eastern area locos continued the pre-group practice of painting the word CLASS below N° on the left of the buffer beam with the class identity below the number on the right. Pre-group classifications were used until 1929 except for standard locos, though even some of these were marked, for example CLASS 4.6.2 (on A3 class). Standard class numbering was used exclusively from 1932. The practice was made universal through the company in early 1938. From April 1943, the system was changed. The Word CLASS was omitted, the number only (e.g. A-4) being on the left, with the shed name on the right. |

| GENERAL NOTES
The black and white lining is used for the green parts of green locos; the red lining is used on lined black locos and the black parts of green locos. Because of the wide variety of types involved, the special shapes will in many cases not be suitable as printed, but can be adapted to fit many more classes of locos. Many photos and more detailed information can be found in the RCTS series "Locomotives of the LNER".
LNER GREEN LOCOS. (use with HMRS Transfer Sheet 4)
The official list of classes is given in our Sheet 4 instructions. Generally, green areas were edged with black, with a white line between black and green. The black edge was normally broad on the tender (top, bottom and font edges - the top and bottom edging continued round the back without a break, on splashers and on the bottom edge of the cab. Black edges were narrow on cab front and back edges, around cab windows and on the front buffer beam. Boiler bands were black, edged with white both sides. Each tender side had a round cornered panel of black, edged white both sides, typically 4" from the bottom, 7" from the front and 9" from the back. The tender back had a similar panel, typically 6" from the sides and bottom. These panels were sometimes omitted on post-war green engines. Where footplate edges incorporated coupling rod splashers, they were green, with narrow black edging around the edges and openings. In other cases, footplate edges were black, as were loco and tender frames and outside cylinders. These black items were outlined in red, generally about ¾" from the edge.
LNER BLACK LOCOS (use with HMRS Transfer Sheet 4a)
Front buffer beams lined narrow black/white, as green locos. Footplate edges, frames etc., were lined red as on green engines. Cabsides, tanks, bunkers, tenders etc., were lined out with single red lines normally with round comers. Horizontal lines were normally continuous round bunker sides and back. These lines were typically about 2" from edges, but this varied between classes. Boiler bands were lined with double red lines.
OTHER APLICATIONS
The sheet will have many uses for locos other than LNER. In particular, the broad black single edged lining and black and white boiler bands will be useful for many SR locos, along with HMRS Transfer Sheet 9. Many pre-grouping applications will also be found.

18" size L M 8 used mainly on brake vans, high sided wagons and on some vans. 12" size L M S used on sliding door vans, hopper and cattle wagons. The low sided vehicles had 9" 6" or 4" L M S, according to the space available. The 6” stretched style L M S was used on some well wagons. Letters were spaced to suit the vehicle. Brake vans (except many pre-group types other than Midland) had the black & white patch high on the body side with the number in 5½ figures. Most other vehicles had 4" running numbers, sometimes with flat topped 3's. Brake vans (in bottom left hand corner) and a few other vehicles had the capacity marked 3” high, e.g, 20T. Tare was also marked 3” high, e.g. 10-8-1 sometimes preceded by TARE. There were few standard positions for insignia in the first period.
Space does not allow for detailed descriptions. A selection of photographs appears in "The LMS Wagon" by R.J. Essery and K.R. Morgan (David & Charles). A comprehensive collection of photographs also appears in R.J. Essery's "LMS Freight Stock”- (OPC)
1936 onwards Body colour - Red Bauxite
Body markings were applied m the bottom left hand corner as shown
LMS (4" letters) Tare in bottom R-H corner - 3" numbers e.g. 10-8-1
12T (3" capacity)
12345 (4" running number)
After 1940, on new wagons, the sizes were reduced to 3" and 2" on a painted patch on an unpainted body - such vehicles were not numerous.
SPECIAL MARKINGS
SINGLE and DOUBLE were applied to bolsters, LARGE to cattle wagons, and LONG LOW to early plate wagons. N denotes a non common user. 0 means that the vehicle is suitable for the Metropolitan. X denotes vehicle is vacuum fined, with the small star marking the release valve point.
Large stars were used in pairs, on Ro-Rail tank wagon chassis. Some special wagons had 6” letters (e.g. CREOSOTE) with 6" numbers. SAW denotes a shock absorbing wagon.
ENGINNEERING DEPT
Wagons were marked with ED, or E on the left with area code (W, N, etc.) on the right. Many wooden ballast wagons had E to the left and the depot place name to the right.

| LOCOMOTIVES
Beginning about 1889 until 1904, many tenders had the curly monogram GWR (large size). Prior to 1914, some locos also had the garter coat of arms on the leading splasher. Beginning probably about 1904 the number appeared on the right of the buffer-beam (black-shaded yellow nos.) Tank engines were numbered both ends. Unlined engines 1904-34 were lettered GREAT WESTERN on tender or (from 1906) tank sides. On lined engines the garter arms appeared between the words until 1927: the double shield arms replaced this 1928-34. All locos had the round monogram without wording 1934-42. From 1943-47 unlined engines used the large letters G W R. Lined engines had the G W with double shield arms. Route availability discs were on the cab side above the numberplate with the power class letter superimposed. The wording BRITISH RAILWAYS was used at Swindon during 1948.
Please note that all dates are approximate painting dates.
Dates in service could be many years later.
COACHES
Prior to 1904, coaches without first-class compartments had the curly monograms. First-class coaches to 1904 and all coaches 1904-27 used the garter arms. G W R was in the waist panel above the arms, class designations in door waist panels (except 'First Class' etc., on saloon stock). Numbers at each end, in the eaves panels in the Dean era and the waist panels later. The garter arms replaced by the double shield 1928-33. From 1933-42, the round monogram replaced both the arms and the letters G W R. After 1933 'Third' was used only on end- door corridor stock. For the above period use the black-shaded gold lettering. Use the plain gold lettering for 1943-47, at first with G W R in the waist panel with double shield arms below it, then form 1945 'Great Western` with the arms between the words. Large GWR and nos. are for railmotors and trailers. ‘No.' was usually used only with one or two figure nos. Prior to 1906, most of these had the large curly monogram. Some (1904-6) had the large GW monogram.

(Pressfix) |
| The lining on this sheet is suitable for certain GWR locos 1900 - 1906, most lined GWR locos 1906-1948 and for lined locos in the BR green livery.
The main items provided are three types of tender side and back panels, cabside and splasher panels, boiler bands, buffer beam edge lining (not used after 1939) name and number plate lines, cylinder cover panels and footplate edge lines (the latter two item again not generally used after 1939).
Before World War 1, all passenger engines were lined. For this period not all required shapes can be catered for on the sheet but most can be obtained by careful cutting and fitting,
From 1915 - 1923 no engines were lined.
In 1923 lining was re-introduced only on the 4-4-0 County, Saint, Star and Castle classes. Kings and Halls later joined the list.
Lining vanished again during World War 2. It returned in 1945 for the 4-6-0 County class and was subsequently applied to Castles, Kings and Halls but without lining below the footplate.
After 1948, the 1945 GWR livery was continued by BR for lined green engines, except that cabside lining did not continue to the top, but formed a panel below the windows.
Cylinder covers had a vertical stripe of boiler band type lining at each end.

| LSWR LOCOMOTIVES
Photos should be consulted where possible as LSWR insignia styles, spacing and positions varied considerably. The curly monogram was introduced for front splashers in 1885, the more angular one in 1893. Tender or tank lettering L&SWR in small letters came into use in 1887, the & soon being omitted. The larger letters LSWR were used from 1906. Buffer beam nos. with NO_ to left of hook and figures to right were in small size block figures at first, the larger size being introduced with the 4-6-0 locos. All items just described are black-shaded gold. From 1895-1912 approx., 4-4-0 locos had the company coat of arm on the leading splashers - this item is not included on this sheet.
SR MAUNSELL PERIOD LOCOMOTIVES
Most locos used the large yellow SOUTHERN, the smaller size being confined to very small tank engines. The largest size numerals (18”) were used on large tender locos and some large tank engines. The smallest size (12") were used in conjunction with the small lettering. Other locos commonly used the intermediate 14" and 16" sizes, but here there were many variations, so it is best to consult a photo if possible. Eastleigh works continued to use the gold block style buffer beam numbers. The yellow ones were used by all works including Eastleigh, where they were especially used for tender and tank back numbers, even on locos with gold front numbers. The very large front numbers were used on certain Schools class locos. The word SOUTHERN appeared high on tender or tank side with the number below it. The small section letters A, B, E or W were above the number. After 1931 the letters A, B and E were dropped. LSWR. section (E) numbers were unchanged, SECR section (A) numbers were increased by 1000, and LBSC section (B) numbers were increased by 2000.
LSWR COACHES
Prior to about 1900, coaches were normally lettered L&SWR. usually towards the left with the number in small size coach numbers towards the right with class lettering FIRST etc., in door waist panels. Guard and luggage doors were marked GUARDS COMPT or LUGGAGE COMPT. From about 1900-1912 small letters LSWR were used, usually in the centre of the vehicle with number towards each end. Class markings were as before except on the bogie block trains, which had the large figures 1, 2 or 3 in the lower door panels until about 1909, after which they had 1st etc. in the door waist panels. From 1912 the larger (4”) size company initials were used, in the waist panel at the centre of the vehicle with the number just to the right of the initials in the larger size coach numbers.
SR MAUNSELL PERIOD COACHES
The words SOUTHERN RAILWAY were normally in the top panel near the coach centre, with the number at each end in small size figures. Class designations, GUARD or LUGGAGE were in door waist panels (the latter often omitted). Some stock, mainly electric motor coaches, had class figures 1 or 3 in the lower panel of the doors instead of words. The plain yellow load markings were at the bottom of the coach side on brake vans, the word Distributed being omitted after the first few years of grouping. On high window stock the company name and numbers were in the waist panel. Seat numbers on corridor stock were at the top of the side or, if space did not permit that, on the side alongside the upper part of the windows. The larger plain yellow numbers are for end set numbers. The insignia on this sheet continued in use on some late 30's and wartime stock but from 1938 the Bulleid style word SOUTHERN was used (Sheet 10). the same sheet includes coach window markings for SMOKING and NON-SMOKING).

Locos in Bulleid livery were lettered SOUTHERN on the tender or tank side with base of lettering typically 2'1½" (8.5mm) above footplate, with number at the same height on the cabside. Front numbers were on right hand half of the buffer beam, except Pacifies, numbered on the black panel above the beam. Gilt insignia (bottom of sheet) was introduced June 1938 (Eastleigh) to Nov. 1939 (Ashford). Most locos had larger size insignia; the smaller ones used on a few classes of small locos. Buffer beam nos. usually the same size as on cab. Green shaded yellow insignia introduced mid 1941, when plain black was standardised for loco painting. Larger size (9”) insignia with 6" buffer beam nos. were standard, with 6”/4½" sizes on some small locos. Black-shaded insignia used from spring 1946, when green painting was re-introduced. 'Merchant Navy' class nos. 21C3-10 were mostly black when built with green shaded insignia and large letter C. Nos. 21C1 1-30 had C the same size as nos. 'West Country' class were green when built with black shaded insignia, except the front no. This was always green shaded on the Pacifies. For a while beginning in 1948, SR locos were letter BRITISH RAILWAYS with 3xxxx series numbers, all in Bulleid style.
COACHES
Unshaded lettering SOUTHERN with pointed N introduced in 1938, usually with remaining insignia in Maunsell style (Sheet 9). Shaded SOUTHERN followed, sometimes close spaced but usually wider ~. Base of lettering 1'10" (7.3mm) above solebar. Number high up on coach side usually at or near each end. Class figures 1 and 3 (also 2 on boat trains) alongside doors, midway up droplight height on modern long window stack or offset to right of lower part of doors, centred just below the handle, on flush sided stock with quarterlights. Class numbers were not used on London area stock in wartime when first class was temporarily abolished. Guard was standard on guard's doors but Luggage probably used only on full luggage vans. Seat numbers were applied above the windows on Bulleid stock. The large plain yellow figures are for set end numbers, applied to both sides of corridor set ends at cantrail. level. Earlier style smaller set numbers are on Sheet 9. Bulleid non corridor electric sets typically had SOUTHERN across the top of the ends in small black shaded yellow loco style with the set number centrally below it, sometimes apparently in black shaded gilt figures. Window stickers were normally high on the outside of windows as follows: Circle and bar smoking (RED) and NON-SMOKING (green), introduced mid 1930's; triangular NO SMOKING and rectangular FIRST CLASS (post war); diamond shape LADIES ONLY.

| Bulleid Pacific locos in Southern Green livery had three horizontal yellow stripes each side running from end to end of both loco and tender. The middle and lower stripes are continuous across the cab front. The upper two stripes on the loco are normally just above and below the cab windows, though just a little higher on the green 'Merchant Navy' clam locos turned out in 1941.
The bottom stripe is just over its own width (about 1mm) above the bottom of the easing over the wheels. On the 'Merchant Navy’ class the middle stripe comes just above the nameplate. On the 'West Country’ class the nameplate covers part of the middle stripe, while on the 'Battle of Britain’ class, the top of the middle stripe comes level with the top of the shield, but usually with a gap of about 15mm in the line at this point The tender stripes are at the same height as the corresponding ones on the loco. The top stripe runs along the top edge of the tender side (or the top of the rear part on the Merchant Navy tenders. The bottom stripe is approx. 6mm from the bottom of the tender side. The number on the cabside and the word SOUTHERN on the tender are midway between the lower two lines. Matching transfers for these with full outline and shading detail on the HMRS Transfers Sheet 10.

| LOAD & TARE
Until 1937, this appeared in script in the form "10 Tons. Tare 5-16" etc, usually at the bottom right-hand of the side. From 1937 the load was in block figures, bottom left, below GW and above the number (e.g. at 10T) with the tare in figures on ("Tare" omitted) in script at bottom right.
CODES AND DEPOTS
Brake van depots were on the third plank down. Wagon codes were normally on the bottom left of the side and over the number, but low-sided vehicles (e.g. coral, carfit etc.) mostly had them midway along. or on the solebars or lower framing.
NUMBERING.
Usually bottom left, but bottom right on most brown vehicles post 1937. XP bottom right above number or tare. Some large vans (e.g. Monster) had number to left of code, bottom centre. On some vans pre- about 1937 and other vehicles pre- 1920, numbers were repeated on the ends.
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS
These appeared where convenient on the vehicle. The circle is for Steam Banana. Small, L, M and S are for cattle wagons. "Not common user” was low down at the right hand side. There are many variations of insignia placing - good photos of most types of GWR goods stock can be found in published books. Please note that all dates are approximate painting dates. Dates in service could be many years later. The white insignia is for normal grey freight stock, the yellow being for brown vehicles, i.e., those which normally appeared in passenger trains. Red insignia is for white-painted refrigerator meat and ‘Tevans'.
COMPANY IDENTITY.
G.W.R was used in the period 1880's to 1904. From 1903-4 the large 25" GW was used where it would fit, being replaced in 1920 by the 16" GW. 12" GW is for crocodiles 3" for carriage trucks and 4½ and 8" for other low sided vehicles. Brown vehicles (not low sided) had the round monogram from 1934 and the small 4" from about 1943. Grey stock (not low sided) kept the 16" GW until 1937, then had the 4" size. Low sided stock kept the intermediate sizes of GW throughout.

| Period 1923-36
Letters NE as large as space permits. On open wagons the capacity (10 TONS) etc.) below the N. and running number in 5" figures below the E in the bottom plank of the side. The number on vans usually somewhat higher, often on the door of sliding-door vans, with special markings (e.g., VENTILATED, etc.) at the same height below the N. Tare weight shown as e.g. 7-19-1, sometimes preceded by TARE, in 3½” figures on solebar above left side of right-hand wheel (usually) The quarters figure often omitted Wheelbase on fitted stock, (e.g. WB 9'0') at right-hand end of solebar. From 1926 non-common user indicated by 4" high N. both ends at bottom of side. Cattle wagons had LARGE OF MEDIUM (to left) and number (to right) in the top plank of the lower side with capacity at left usually half-way down. Non-passenger coaching stock markings thus; MCK. 4-wh. CCT; LCK long 4 wh, CCT; XCK, 6-wh, CCT; BCK, bogie CCT; CK, carriage truck; SC. special cattle. Ends of some fitted stock branded thus: Vac, braked, VB; vac.piped only, VP; dual braked, VBWH pre-1932, DB post-1932. Stars on solebar for Vac, brake release. letter E is suffix to Engineers' Department vehicle numbers for the first few years after 1923.
Period 1937-48 (as painted - earlier style found in service for many years)
Bottom left-hand corner of vehicle side marked as in this example: NE (4" letters) 10T (3” capacity) 123456 (4" running no.) Spaces vertically between items W. Tare in 3” figures e.g. 8-15 (sometimes with quarters) at first.) at bottom right of side. A few wartime new vehicles had sizes reduced to 3” and 2”. Special codes and markings unchanged from earlier period. Non-passenger coaching stock retained 5” numerals. From about 1938, wheelbase markings were put above tare figures - if over 1Oft, letters XP were added over wheelbase. Black insignia (both periods) are for white bodies of refrigerator vans.
M&GN and Cheshire Lines
Traffic wagons and vans on these lines were split between the LNER and LMS (M&GN in 1936, CL in 1930) and probably were repainted fairly quickly, but brake vans and service stock retained their joint line markings. On the CL the serif style is earlier - typical examples are given as this style varied a good deal in size and shape.

| SR 1923-36 livery (top right of sheet)
Letters were normally, as large as would fit. Ordinary wagons and vans usually had number bottom left of side in the larger (5") figures with e.g. TARE 7.2. 1 bottom right and load e.g. 10 TONS above it. Letter N if non-common user at extreme ends alongside or below number and tonnage. Cattle wagons had large SR on side, number in small figures on solebar. Other markings on left side of ends: number (5") just above halfway up with 5" SR above it TARE 6. 13. 1 etc., just above drainage gap at bottom and 10 TONS etc., halfway between.
SR 1936 - 47 livery (top left of sheet)
Number (4" size) bottom let capacity (e.g. 7. 10 (no words)) but sometimes as e.g. 8. 1.0 with T.C.Q. above. Letters N as before when applicable, but at left hand end only after 1940. Special vehicle markings (top, left of centre of sheet) were common to both periods - positions vary according to type of vehicle. Venetian red insignia is for Meat vans etc. painted stone colour - these sometimes had white letter N.
LONDON & SOUTH WEST Small letters L&SWR used until 1895-1900 when the large letters LSWR were used where space permitted with the smaller size on low sided vehicles (e.g. bolsters). Numbers were usually in 6" figures - position varied but open wagon typically had number at right second plank up with load below it in script. Tare shown e.g. 6.18.2 (no word) at left in 2½ " figures (smallest SR size) at same height as number. Many vans had number top, centre or right, with tare sometimes right of centre. Road vans marked LOAD ONE TON at bottom of side doors.
LONDON BRIGHTON & SOUTH COAST RAILWAY
Low sided vehicles (and others in early days) seem mostly to have been lettered LB&SCR (sometimes with full stops). The largest size LB&SCR was used on Cattle wagons. Large LBSC was final standard type for vehicles large enough to take it with 6”figures on ordinary vehicles but 10" figures on brake vans, the number being towards left of vehicle. Tare usually bottom left, e.g. 7.4.2 (use smallest SR figures). Vehicles with small size letters often had matching size or smaller nos. (sometimes proceeded by No.) alongside or below the letters.
SOUTH EASTERN & CHATHAM RAILWAY
Ordinary wagons and vans normally lettered as for pre-1936 SR except tare was marked on solebar. Use standard SR tare nos, 5" size figures and TONS. Smallest letters SECR used on bolster wagons with number to left, tare to right and 12 TONS just left of it, all in same size figures. Many other low sided and earlier wagons lettered SE&CR. Brake vans had S E C R high on side with GOODS BRAKE below E and C. Typical London Chatharn and Dover Railway open wagon marking was L.C.D.R. across middle of side doors. Number e.g. No875 halfway tip left hand side, load e.g. To Carry 6 Tons at bottom of left side and tare e.g. 6.17.0 (no word) bottom of right side. South Eastern Railway brake vans of Road Van type were lettered S.E.R. GOODS BREAK between doors and droplight 2/3rds way up side with the number below 'GOODS' in same size as letters S.E.R.

| LOCOMOTIVES
Steam locos (except GWR types) were numbered in the style at the upper left part of the sheet. The Southern, Eastern, North-Eastern and Scottish regions mostly used the larger figures and the LMR mostly the medium size, with variations according to loco type. The words BRITISH RAILWAYS used in 1948 (The Western Region used GWR style, found on Sheet 7). From 1949-1956 the lion-on-wheel crest was used on locos (size according to type) and the smaller size on the motor cars of Multiple Units. From about 1957 the circle and banner crest was used, until 1968 on steam locos, and about 1966 on diesels. Some diesel locos had the round coach crest applied. Some diesel shunters had steam loco style numbers prefixed with the letter D. Numbers for other diesel and some electric locos are on Sheet 15. The very small figures and letters are for steam loco power class, situated on cabside above the loco number. Electrification warnings have been used on locos and the leading ends of Multiple Units from about the rnid-1960's.
COACHES
The insignia on this sheet was used for coaches, MU's and passenger parcel vans from 1948 to about 1966 (all liveries other than Pullmans prior to the introduction of Rail Blue). The coach number appeared towards the right hand end of the coach with its regional letter before it and former company initial (if pre-Nationalisation) after it. Class figures (1 for first class, 2 for boat-train seconds up to 1956 and 3 for some ex LMS sleepers up to 1956) were midway up lower door panels. Catering vehicle markings had the bottom of the letters about halfway up the coach side bottom panel. Small lettering GUARD etc., was on doors just below the waistline. Distributed Load markings on brake compartments and vans was just above the bottom of the side. BR Mk.1 coach ends were marked Restriction Cl on the left just above waist level. Emergency Lighting Point was placed on underframes about halfway along, but was not visible on many coaches. The star and white W, also on underframes, marked vacuum and Westinghouse brake release points. Note: Window markings FIRST - 1 - NO SMOKING are printed in reverse for application to window interiors. The original versions were the banner shaped First and the triangular No Smoking. For economy of printing the later square 1 and the round No Smoking signs are included on this sheet and should be used with the white coach insignia on Sheet 15. All three varieties of No Smoking sign could at times be seen on the same coach! Parcel vans (8-wheel GUV and 4-wheel CCT) are marked at the right hand end. Reading downwards the markings on these vehicles are: GUV, number, dimensions, Tare 30T. CCT, number, dimensions, XP, Wheelbase (or WB) 23'6" Tare 17t 6c. Sorry, this item is currently sold out |

| LOCOMOTIVES (diesel and electric)
All locos have the BR symbol, once on each side on many locos, or at both ends on others. The size and position varies according to type. (On some locos and MUs, the symbol is of cut-out metal, not provided for on this sheet). Locos in green livery and many in the early years of Rail Blue were numbered in the tall narrow style figures with D (omitted after 1968) or E (until adoption 5-figure number system) at one or both ends, or on the cab of shunters. Before the blue livery a crest was also carried - see Sheet 14 for these. These figures were spaced .9mm apart on the model, with 1¾mm (sometimes less) between the letter and first figure. Soon after the adoption of Rail Blue the wider Rail Alphabet numerals were standardised, at first with D or E as before and later in the current 5-figures with an increased space of approx. 1.1mm between the second and third figure. These spaces apply to locos using standard 150mm figures (at left of sheet). Some small shunting locos use the 100mm figures used on coaches.
COACHES, MU's and PARCEL VANS
Many coaches at the introduction of Rail Blue livery had the regional letter and number in 75mm size (left centre of sheet) but 100mm (on right) was soon standardised. The number is usually centred under the right-hand window (Mk. 1) or in the space between end window and door (Mk.2) on a base-line approx. 65mm on model above the bottom of the coach side. First class doors are marked 'l' and principal express stock 'Inter-City', this usually starting under the left-hand end of the left-hand window. These and catering vehicle markings are set on the same base-line as the number. Catering vehicles are marked usually at or near the middle of the side - they are not marked 'Inter-City' as well. Spacing between words, e.g. 'Buffet Restaurant' varies greatly, up to as much as 14mm on the model. The wording 'Restaurant Car' etc., was an earlier form with few if any now surviving (Dec. 1978). The small lettering 'Guard' etc., appears on doors about 11.2mm from bottom of coach side. The all-capital versions are officially not correct but some still exist. Distributed Load markings appear just above the bottom of brake compartments. End markings are on the left of each end with coach type (RB (A) 100MPH etc.) about level with the coach number and Cl just above waist level (Mk. 1 and 2 coaches) -Mk.3 are restriction C3. Some coaches are marked 'Emergency Lighting Point' about midway along the underframe. Stars (various shapes and sizes are in use) mark the brake release point. Please note that coach window markings for first class and no smoking are on Sheet 14. Most MUs have the BR symbol at each end of the set (smallest or second sizes). Many sets have recently been repainted white with a 7mm (on model) Rail Blue stripe below the windows. In PTE areas the PTE symbol replaces the BR symbol at the left-hand end on each side of these sets. The symbols reading down, left to right as printed are West Midlands, south Yorkshire, Greater Glasgow, Merseyside, West Yorkshire, Tyne and Wear, Greater Manchester. EMUs and Inter-City 125 DMUs have the set number on the end in 100 or 125mm black figures sometimes repeated bottom left in 50mm size. Some LMR EMU's have the end vehicle no. instead. WR DMUs have the set number preceded by the Division initial. GUV and CCT vans are so marked near the top right-hand end with the number below (75mm size) then dimensions, tare etc. Most BR-built vans are branded (logo Express Parcels) near the left-hand end. 4-wheel 21ft. vans have (logo Express Parcels) set out vertically lower left with SPV, number, etc., lower right. Many parcel vans during 1978 have received new codes (NAV etc). Full brakes were formally coded BG(DH) lower right - many are now coded NEA(DH) in a variety of sizes. Inter-City 125 power cars marked with large letters and double arrows. Passenger cars now marked Inter-City 125 in standard lettering (originally just Inter-City).

| BR MIXED TRAFFIC (LINED BLACK) LOCOMOTIVES
Minor variations of style occurred between regions and between classes of locos, so consult photos whenever possible. Upper cabsides were normally unlined, but some cabs with uninterrupted flat sides (e.g. SR t9) were lined all round. Lower cabsides, bunker sides and tank sides each carried a panel of lining nominally 5 inches (1.7mm in 4mm scale) from the outer edge, with corners and curves to suit the outer shape. Reversed corners with red outside are provided for re-entrant angles. Larger reversed curves can be found among the LNWR shapes. Use close spaced lines for footplate edges if they are very narrow - on wider ones use lines of normal spacing. Standard splasher lining was grey and red round the outside with a horizontal line of red only just above the footplate, but sometimes both colours were continued all round the splasher. Ex-LMS tank locos mostly seem to have had no splasher lining at all. Each boiler band had a double red line. Tender sides were mostly lined in a rectangular panel as on the LNWR, though sometimes on flush-sided tenders the lining followed the shape of the tender top. Steps, tender frames and other items below the footplate were unlined.

BR Sturgeon Rail/Ballast/Sleeper wagon, with side doors (D1/645) |
£13.50 |
|
|
|
(Cambrian) |
| The Sturgeon wagon was based on the LNER "Dolphin" wagons, although these had fixed ends, and diamond-framed bogies. This kit is for the as-built wagons with side doors, for carrying rails, ballast & sleepers. It is thought that ballast was rarely transported in Sturgeons, the main use of those with side doors being for sleepers (old or new) or recovered rails. Some ran without the two top end pieces. Although there were stowage racks under the wagon for these pieces, it is quite likely that some were simply taken off and left in a PW yard, as photos show that they were often missing. In later years, some had the side uprights cut off level with the top of the folding end panel.
Note: Parts for the actual racks are not included in the kit.
The kit can be made with these pieces in place, or omitted. The two sections slot into the side uprights, so don't have to be fixed on (although they could get lost – just like the real ones).
The folding end plate can also be fitted on in the folded down position – although this does have to be glued on. Includes "One-piece" bogies with optional "NEM" pocket for "fish-tail" couplings such as the Hornby R8219. Sorry, this item is currently sold out |

SR "Borail" Bogie Rail Wagon Kit (D1598) |
£11.55 |
|
|
|
(Cambrian) |
| These wagons were built from 1937, beginning with a batch of 25 wagons. 30 more followed in 1943, and 50 in 1945. The later ones had different buffers. The kit includes all three types of buffers: as built the first batch had SECR-type buffers, later ones had unusual Bulleid ones with rectangular buffer head spindles. The wagons were used to transport new rails which meant that they travelled to/from Workington or Scunthorpe. In BR days the wagons were used to transport used rail panels and sometimes other items, such as bridge girders. With "one-piece" diamond-framed bogies.
The picture shows a pre-production mock-up using some parts from other kits. The lashing rings are separate mouldings that can be put on as shown or upwards if lashing chains are attached to them. |

SR "Borail" Bogie Rail Wagon Kit (D1599) |
£11.55 |
|
|
|
(Cambrian) |
| Identical to the last batches of D1598, except for having cast bogies. Built in 1946 & 1948, there was a total of 69 wagons. Some had provision for "Robel" cranes to unload rails – these had been first used on 3 wagons of D1598 in 1937. These wagons and the earlier ones had wood planks fitted when their own steel floors became badly rusted (planking is not included in the kit). With "one-piece" cast bogies.
The picture shows a pre-production model. |

BR STURGEON Rail/Sleeper/Ballast wagon (without side doors) |
£11.55 |
|
|
|
(Cambrian) |
| The Sturgeon wagon was based on the LNER "Dolphin" wagons, although these had fixed ends, and diamond-framed bogies. This kit is for the wagons which ran without their sides, and generally carried track panels. Some ran with ends, or just the side uprights, and others without any of these. Although there were stowage racks under the wagon for these pieces, it is quite likely that some were simply taken off and left in a PW yard.
(Parts for the actual racks are not included in the kit)
The kit can be made with some or all of the end pieces in place. It is also possible to fit the end components together as a separate unit, meaning that you have the option of putting them on or leaving them off – they don't have to be glued on. The two top end sections slot into the side uprights, so don't have to be fixed on (although they could get lost – just like the real ones).
The folding end plate can also be fitted on in the folded down position – although this does have to be glued on. Includes "One-piece" bogies with optional "NEM" pocket.
The kit also includes optional "winches" for lashing straps (shown fitted in the main picture), and stanchions for the wagons which were converted to carry new sleepers – these were the earlier D1/638 wagons which had 8 doors per side. The solebar door hinge detail on this kit would need altering, as the D1/638 wagons had four "lift-off" (easier said than done!) doors, with far less fittings on the solebars.
NOTE: these wagon cannot be used on curves less than "2nd radius" (about 450mm), as the wheels would jam against the solebar. The coupling mount is for Hornby R8219 couplings, although other "split-tail" couplings that fit a NEM coupling pocket could be used.
The kit is designed for Alan Gibson 10·5mm "Lowmac" wheels – use of wheels with larger flanges than these have, will lead to clearance problems on curves. They will either stick against the back of the solebars, or the bogie mounting.
THE HORNBY COUPLINGS SHOWN ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THE KIT. Sorry, this item is currently sold out |
